SUMMARY OF PROJECTS As of February 6, 2007

1. Night of Peace Family Shelter (Mark Miller) – Ron Swecker and Bob Jones (Warranty Service Manager) of Grayson Homes are both working on this project The address of the property is 7509 Windsor Mill Road, Baltimore. Grayson plans to install a shower, handicap toilet, lavatory sink and hook ups for the washer and dryer. They are in the process of contacting the plumber and the electrician in order to schedule a time to preview the job with them. Bobby Jones is waiting to hear back from a few of their trade partners who have graciously decided to assist them in the undertaking. They asked each of the partners for a proposal outlining their specific scope of work so the appropriate permits can be applied for to start the job. Currently, Bobby Jones has learned that several permits are required for the improvements that have been planned and because the space is going to be ADA they are required to have two signed and sealed architectural sets of floor plans. There is a chance that the county will accept a simple floor plan sketch in lieu of the architectural sets, but their contact for Baltimore County permits does not think this is likely since this is considered to be a change of use – from storage space to living space. This may likely require another visit to the shelter. Inquiries with architectural firms are presently being made to see who might be interested in donating their services for this cause.

2. Arc of Baltimore – Kevin Carney suggested one of the remodelers to look at the project and do it with a $4,000 cap to be reimbursed to the remodeler from the Foundation. Steve Gilman of AssemblyLine, Inc. has been out to view the job and necessary requirements. He has reported that they have been asked to remove an existing porch and replace it with a new porch and ramp at the house. This opportunity will be presented to the entire RC membership rather than just their Board members. As of now, the Remodelors Council is set to meet 1/16/07.

3. Lighthouse Shelter in Annapolis (Lou Baker) – The Lighthouse is an emergency shelter for men, women and children operated by Annapolis Area Ministries, Inc. Fifteen beds are available for single men (10) and women (5) in the dormitory, and two transitional apartments on the premises offer emergency shelter to families. Self-sufficiency support services are provided by professional caseworkers. The facility is open on a 24/7 basis. In cooperation with the Haven Foundation of HBAM’s Building Industries Foundation, Pulte Homes and Koch Homes are sponsoring the Lighthouse Shelter as part of their company’s charitable giving committees. In the 1+ years of involvement, Pulte and Koch have spearheaded efforts at the Shelter to replace two sets of stairs, replace and paint three exterior doors, paint exterior walls, replace door hardware, and replace and paint exterior trim work. More specifically, the rear interior stairway was completely rebuilt using Koch’s contractors (primarily Century Stair Company) in early 2006; egress door and frame located on side wall of this shelter was replaced by Pulte during the summer of 2006. Both companies and their trade partners are committed to maintaining a long-term relationship with this very worthwhile cause and are now planning their next phase of work at the Shelter. Currently, coordination with the new project manager for this charitable cause (Dewitt Wilcox), the Executive Director of the Lighthouse Shelter (Toni Graff) and Rich Pezullo (Koch Homes) is underway to identify and coordinate the next phase of work. The shelter is now in need of exterior paint.

4. Grass Roots Homeless Shelter in Howard County (Frank Potepan) – Catonsville Homes and Winchester Homes (Joe Lucado) have been working on the temporary relocation of the old homeless shelter to Dr. Taylor’s hospital campus in Ellicott City while the new structure is being constructed. Both facilitated the plumbing ground work, rough-in and trim out. Greg Sinclair, one of Catonsville Homes superintendents, provided on-site supervision and a multitude of punch-out work. The rough in inspection is today, dry wall and cabinets, amongst other things, by next week. All labor and materials have been donated, in the range of $30,000 to $50,000. Various vendors have also donated, included ABC Rental who donated a concrete saw and jack hammer for the demolition of the concrete slab for the new ground work. Charles Klein Plumbing and Heating donated their material and labor. Projects of this magnitude need ‘front page’ coverage, exposure and recognition. This is such a big contribution on behalf of the building industry. We need to educate the consumer and public on builder image.

5. Carroll County Hospice - The Carroll Hospice project was started in the spring of 2006 and opened its doors January 15th of this year. The Hospice facility is a 6 million dollar project which included 8 beds in phase 1 and was designed to be able to add an additional 8 beds in the future. The Dove House, the inpatient facility, is located on the corner of route 32 and Stoner Road adjacent to Carroll County General Hospital. The patient census for the first 3 weeks has been an average of 2 with the length of stay from 1 day to 7 days.
